But as we’ve seen, prayer is much more than just asking for things. Prayer also includes adoration, praising and thanksgiving. At the same time, we need to understand its OK to make our requests known to God. In fact, it’s important that we do because it solidifies our relationship with our Heavenly Father.

We all understand how it works. A child has needs and a parent steps in to meet them. There’s nothing wrong with this arrangement; it’s just the way life is supposed to work. As a matter of fact, the wrong thing would be for parents to not respond to their children’s needs. If we understand this, we can rest assured that God does too.

Christ even encouraged us to have an attitude of asking. Notice the emphasis: “Give us. Forgive us. Rescue us.” These are all requests, and they ought to be included in our prayers. Again, it’s OK to ask.

Why is it so important that we get this? Because if we never express our needs to God, we’ll never see Him as the one who meets our needs, and that’s a huge part of the parent/child relationship that He wants with us. Our degree of reliance on God is also the degree of relational depth that we have with Him.
