We may not realize it, but the tongue that we possess can declare life or death over our lives, situations and get an immediate reaction from someone, good or bad.

The bible says the tongue is a “small part of the body” (James 3:5), yet Proverbs 18:21 says it “has the power of life and death.” This holds true whether we’re speaking of spiritual, physical or emotional “life and death.”

We need to be careful on the things that comes forth out of our mouth. The tongue has been used to change history in the world. It has been used many times to declare war. We should keep in mind that the word tongue is often a reference to the spoken word. So when God was creating the world, He used the spoken word and declared the things that exists today. That’s how mighty the tongue is.

Here are some scriptures about the power of the tongue:

Proverbs 18:21 – Death and life [are] in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

Proverbs 15:1 – A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.

James 3:6 – And the tongue [is] a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

Proverbs 25:15 – By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone.

Proverbs 12:18 – There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise [is] health.

James 3:8 – But the tongue can no man tame; [it is] an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

Proverbs 17:27 – He that hath knowledge spareth his words: [and] a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.

Psalms 127:3 – Lo, children [are] an heritage of the LORD: [and] the fruit of the womb [is his] reward.

Leviticus 19:16 – Thou shalt not go up and down [as] a talebearer among thy people: neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbour: I [am] the LORD.

1 Peter 3:10 – For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile.
